Web 2.0 Tools

While the above chart lists some of my favorite web 2.0 tools, it is by no means meant to illustrate the only tools that will be used in the Theatre classroom. The opportunities to use technology in cooperation with education are virtually endless. Whether students are  researching the style of the time period during which a play takes place or looking for material to perform, I would encourage every current and prospective educator to spend time researching web 2.0 tools and their uses in the classroom.

flickr! - A great way to store and share your photos online. The site is easy to navigate and has many search options. Flickr! would be an excellent resource for students researching various time periods and locations when designing sets and costumes for a play

Wikipedia- I would say that almost everyone has used wikipedia in some capacity. Type in a word, hit search, and voila!, you have information on whatever subject your are researching. Wikipedia is great for students but they should also be encouraged to go beyond just using wikipedia and research using a variety of sources and methods.

Youtube- As with Wikipedia, it is safe to say that almost everyone has used or at least knows about youtube. However, aside from looking up music or funny videos, the site is a great educational resource. For example, students may use the site to research videos taken of different performances of a certain play.

Google Docs - Google Docs allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating in real-time with other users. It is also a free web-based word processor, spreadsheet, and data storage service. Very useful for students and teachers to use as a collaborative tool outside of the classroom or as a place to store classroom documents.

Wikis- I have already listed Wikipedia but students and teachers may use them within the classroom to create and demonstrate information on various topics. A wiki is a website that allows for easy creation and editing any number of interlinked web pages.

PBworks- Another collaborative editing workspace. Great for fostering communication among students, teachers, and students to ensure that information is available at anytime.

Blogger- Well, if you are reading this, I would hope that you know what Blogger is. In case you are still confused, it is a blog publishing service with several options to make each blog as individual as its creator. Great for teachers to use as a way to communicate with parents and students.

Chalksite- Apparently, this service is no longer available but there are others like it to accomplish the same tasks. Basically, the purpose of this page was to allow educators to post grades, send messages, and post assignments. It was meant to be a product similar to but more user-friendly than Blackboard.

30 Boxes- Every teacher needs some kind of calender stay on top of things given the fast pace of the classroom. 30 Boxes is a free service that allows you to add events to an online calender. You can also share the calender with friends or on your blog. Having an online viewable calender would be great for keeping track of play rehearsals and call times.
